National Strategy for Community Justice: Call For Views

The Scottish Government define Community Justice as being “principally about organisations working together to ensure that people who have offended address the underlying causes of their behaviour, and pay back to the community where appropriate. It aims to encourage rehabilitation, reduce reoffending, and protect the public, leading to fewer victims and safer communities. “

Our Cultural Manifesto (crowd-sourced by Culture Counts members) said the Justice sector should seriously consider the power of art (in the broadest possible sense) across all stages of its work.

This includes working with at-risk young people, young people in custody, adults in prison, and also people serving community sentences. It has great potential to reach vulnerable individuals, preventing them from entering into the justice system in the first place – this focus could of course be applied in the education sector in conjunction with the justice sector.

Call for views

The Scottish Government has recently opened a call for views on key aspects of the revised National Strategy for Community Justice. The call for views closes on 25 May 2022.

Alongside this consultation, ScotGov will also hold workshop discussions to further explore views. If you are interested in taking part, please email: cjstrategy@gov.scot.
