Scottish Government Response to Call for 3 Year Culture Budget
On 8 December 2020, Culture Counts wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Fair Work and Culture to ask that the Scottish Government give serious consideration to the announcement of a three-year culture budget in January 2021.
Culture Counts received a written response from Culture and Historic Environment Division within the Scottish Government on 5 January 2021. Read the full letter here. (PDF).
The letter explains that the Covid-19 pandemic, and elections later this year present obstacles to multi-year budgeting.
From the letter: “We know that the pandemic has exposed the precariousness of work in the cultural sector, and understand that greater predictability of funding over the long-term can help to mitigate this, as well as bringing benefits such as those mentioned in your letter. However, the current circumstances mean that it is not possible to make commitments to multi-year investments. We can, however, offer assurance that we intend to review this thoroughly as soon as budget processes allow.”
