Scottish Household Survey: Culture & Heritage 2019
The Scottish Household Survey (SHS) is a face-to-face survey of a sample of people in private residences all over Scotland. For the first time, the key findings on culture and heritage have a standalone report. Access the SHS Culture and Heritage Report 2019 here.
The SHS is the main source of data on engagement with, and attitudes to, culture and heritage in Scotland. Key findings from the Culture and Heritage Report 2019 include:
90% of adults were culturally engaged in the last 12 months. Either having attended or visited a cultural event or place or having participated in a cultural activity in the last 12 months.
81% of adults in Scotland had attended or visited a cultural event or place in the last 12 months.
75% of adults in Scotland had participated in a cultural activity in the last 12 months.
In 2019, two new questions on the impact of culture on people’s lives were introduced to the Survey.
Just under a half of respondents (46%) either strongly agreed or tended to agree with the statement ‘culture and the arts make a positive difference to my life’.
Around half of adults (50%) either strongly agreed or tended to agree with the statement ‘culture and the arts make a positive difference to my local community’.
Comparison With 2018
SHS Questions for culture and heritage where updated in 2018, so comparison to previous years isn't possible or published. In the three metrics above, the % rate held in from 2018.
This SHS data goes into the National Perfomance Framework outcome for culture. The framework's outcomes and indicators give a measure of national wellbeing. You can see the progress and data on the National Perofmance Framwork site. More detailed brekadowns are available on the Equality Evidence Finder.
